Search and Rescue crews remind recreationists to be safe this summer

MURRAY, Utah – Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer outdoor season.

According to a recent study, 71 percent of Life Flight rescues in Utah happen between May and September.

Search and Rescue and Life Flight crews want to remind people that as they head outdoors and into the mountains, to keep safety in mind.

They say when tourists and residents head out to hike in canyons, and play in rivers and lakes throughout the state, the number of calls for search and rescue operations skyrocket. But they say many of those situations can be prevented.

Intermountain Healthcare names healthiest principal in Salt Lake Valley

SALT LAKE CITY – Intermountain Healthcare challenged 13 elementary school principals to a 100-day challenge to see who is the healthiest in the Salt Lake Valley, and the winners of the challenge were announced on Wednesday.

As part of the My Heart Challenge, the principals had to change their habits by exercising more and eating better, and they pushed their students to do the same.

“Before the challenge, my biggest health concern was my weight. I was overweight, out of shape and super busy. I had plenty of excuses for why I shouldn’t exercise or eat healthy,” said Becky Gerber, principal at Herriman Elementary School.

Overall, the 13 principals lost a total 228 pounds in 100 days, or an average of just over 17.5 pounds each.

Gerber was the overall winner and Mark Longe, principal at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Salt Lake City, took home the prize for Most Improved.

Two Unified Fire paramedics facing prescription drug fraud charges

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah – Two paramedics within the Unified Fire Authority face charges of prescription drug fraud.

The charges come less than two weeks after Unified Fire Deputy Chief Marlon Jones was charged with 14 counts of prescription drug fraud.

Longtime UFA paramedic Bruce  Bergdahl was arrested Wednesday at his Box Elder County residence, charged with three felony counts of illegally obtaining prescription pain medications, primarily oxycodone.

“In these cases my investigators tell me there’s not hundreds but thousands of pills,” said Cottonwood Heights Police Chief Robby Russo.

The investigation began last month when Cottonwood Heights police began looking into the disappearance of drugs like morphine and fentanyl from UFA firehouses. Russo’s team began looking at the records of UFA employees.

Salt Lake County proposes mutual commitment registry

SALT LAKE CITY – Unmarried couples and same-sex partners living in Salt Lake County will soon be able to get benefits they don’t have now. The county is launching a mutual commitment registry, similar to what Salt Lake City put in place in 2008.

The idea, however has its critics. The county is legally recognizing relationships the state doesn’t, especially when it comes to same sex couples, but the registry is also for people who may be the legal caretaker of someone, whether it’s a relative or a partner. Still, one group says it’s a slippery slope.

“I believe this will be primarily used by same sex couples,” says Salt Lake County Councilman Arlyn Bradshaw who is openly gay.

Study: Salt Lake City ranks highest in same-sex couples raising children

SALT LAKE CITY — Researchers at a UCLA think tank say the Salt Lake City metropolitan area ranks highest in the nation for same-sex couples raising children.

Twenty-six percent of same-sex couples in Salt Lake City are raising children, according to a press release issued Monday by The Williams Institute at UCLA.

“The metro areas with the highest percentages of same-sex couples raising children are in states that have a constitutional ban on marriage,” the press release said.

The Williams Institute published separate findings for metropolitan areas with populations above 1 million (including SLC), metropolitan areas with populations below 1 million and individual states.

The State of Utah ranked 13th in the nation for the percentage of same-sex couples raising children. Slightly over 20 percent of same-sex couples in Utah are raising children, according to data provided by The Williams Institute.
